One of the most frustrating things about being girl is the societal pressure to wear make-up. I understand that make-up can not only enhance the naturally beautiful aspects of our face to make us look more appealing but also to protect our skin from the harsh elements of our world.
This sounds entirely fabulous and we can see beautiful, spot-free, perfectly covered, fake results plastered all over those ridiculously photoshopped pictures in magazines that make the rest of us feel like shit. To be perfectly honest with you, I just about know how to wear make-up, even if I know nothing about this amazing product that induces both love and hate at the same time.
I am not a big make-up fanatic although I do admit I enjoy wandering around Boots, admiring all these products that promise this, that or the other, and wondering “will this actually do what it says on the tin, make me look like a tangerine or cause undue havoc on my skin?” Despite not being a fanatic, I cannot leave my house without at least a slick of BB cream and a flick of mascara, to hide all my little insecurities. It is the unfortunate side effect of a society that has cosmetics as one of the biggest giants in the world. Thank you so much, Society(!)
Now, if you are like me and have ridiculously fair skin, then you know the annoyance, irritation and pain it is to find the right make-up. Because of my fair skin, I almost always have to choose the fairest shade of concealer, foundation and powder, otherwise I will turn out like an orange. I doubt that is a pretty sight. Either way, trying to find the right shade is an irritation, so when it comes round to replacing used make-up, I tend to habitually choose the make-up I used before because I know the exact shade I need. This would have been great except for the fact your skin changes as you get older. Products that you used as a teenager suddenly becomes unusable as an adult and you may just end up wasting money as a result of staying within your comfort zone.
Since turning 21, I had noticed that my skin did not react very well to the make-up and cleansing ritual I used every day and I continue to have a daily battle with a constant breakout on my chin/cheek that has now been there since February. Since using gentler and more natural products such as Clinique and Lush respectively (and drinking a ton of water), my skin has pretty much cleared except for that breakout. My skin is also quite sensitive so I have to gradually bring myself into a new routine to avoid any undue havoc. Therefore I have decided to make the transition to homemade natural products. For the past number of days, I have been scouring the internet looking for doable, cheap and easy homemade make-ups, body products and cleansers that I can use using all natural ingredients. I have found the perfect two to start with; shampoo and loose powder. Why do I start with these you ask? Well, because they are among the most annoying for me to buy.
Unfortunately, my scalp took a bad reaction to Head & Shoulders (which I shouldn’t have used at all since it is a very harsh shampoo) and for the past 2 years, I have been having to buy expensive shampoos or take some sort of ointment to get rid of the horrible dryness it has left me with. Now that I am at the end of my tether, I have figured the chemicals are probably aggravating it. Therefore, all natural homemade shampoo it is! The same with loose powder, I have the issue of blocked pores (not so much since I discovered the wonders of primer) and fair skin. Powder gives me an ungodly amount of blackheads (again only without the primer and if I don’t cleanse) and can sometimes look ridiculously orange. Time for a change!
Deciding on these two homemade products, a trip to Holland & Barratts is in the table so I can buy some essential oils and any other products I need. The rest is easily obtained in the supermarket. I do need to finish the make-up I have at the moment really, but until then, the experiments begin! Wish me luck!
If you want to check out the recipes I will be following, you can check them out via these websites! They are both simple and have a nice range of choice for all natural beauty products.
